Did you know that black dogs are the least likely dogs to be adopted?
Strange as it seems, particularly black labs or lab mixes, are euthanized at a horrifying rate at many pounds and shelters throughout the country because people pass them up for lighter colored dogs.

Help Freeway: This is His Story

FREEWAY UPDATE: Our lucky boy Freeway has gone home to foster care with three foster sisters, Cinder, Cookie and Gypsy. These girls all gave an outstanding approval of him prior to his arrival. He has successfully napped with his foster mom Sally this afternoon He will be attending puppy class tonight at Aardvark's Dog Training Center in Vallejo! Thank you, Janet Hanke of Aardvark's and Bobbi Durston for donating his puppy class. Doc Linville of All Creatures Vetrinary Hospital asked to see him in a week to remove his stitches and a post surgery check-up.

Freeway was rescued from a horrifying ordeal by Angela and River Porter, who were on their way to work and school the morning of Thursday, April 19, 2012.

Angela was driving from I-80 onto the 780 freeway towards Benicia. She noticed something dangling in the wind on the side of a black Chevy pick-up truck . As she got closer to the truck, she realized she was looking at a dog hanging from a rope and hitting the side of the truck. Angela began honking her horn to get the driver's attention, but she was not able to get him to pull over. Finally at the Glen Cove exit, the truck began to slow and exit. The rope holding the dog broke and Freeway rolled and hit the cement barrier on the side of the road.

The pick-up drove away and Angela and River stopped next to the dog. Angela thought the dog was dead, but to her and her son's surprise, Freeway was breathing and in shock. River rushed back to the car to get the phone to call 911. The CHP arrived and soon after Vallejo Humane Officer Amy Dart arrived on the scene. Freeway was transported to All Creatures Veterinary Hospital. Freeway sustained injuriies to his feet, bruises from hitting the truck and payment and a broken back right leg. All Creatures' attending doctor, Dr. Robert Linville, and his staff attended to Freeway's needs. Because Freeway's back right leg was so badly injured and could not be repaired, Dr. Linville had to surgically amputate it.

Freeway is now recovering nicely at All Creatures and has been walking around on all three legs. He is getting used to a lot of attention! He has also been able to spend time with his rescuers, Angela and River.

What is next for Freeway? He will be going into a temporary foster home until he is released from the care of Dr. Linville. He needs to recover from his surgery and heal from the bumps and bruises from being tossed around like a rag doll.

Cocoa Mulch Warning for Pet Owners

Pet owners should be aware of the danger posed by a popular gardening product�mulch made from cocoa shells. Cocoa mulch can be toxic to dogs and other pets. Depending on the size of the animal and the amount of mulch ingested, pets could suffer anything from stomach upset to cardiac arrest and possible death.

The Benicia-Vallejo Humane Society, an organization founded in 1987 and which has been serving the local community of homeless animals and their adoptive families since 1991, is changing its name effective January 1, 2011 to the Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB). And although the name has changed, the mission stays the same: providing a safe place for homeless animals, and offering those animals and their adoptive families a lifetime of rewarding, loving companionship.

The 500 club of the Benicia Vallejo Humane Society began in October of 2003.

�We started the 500 Club as a first step to make a difference in the number of stray and unwanted animals in our community.� Says Peter Wilson, Director of Humane Services for the Benicia Vallejo Humane Society. Our goal is to have 500 donors each year donate a minimum of $100 dollars to the club. Those who need assistance with Spay/Neuter of their animals are able to purchase a voucher to at low cost to spay/neuter or in some cases there is no cost to the pet guardian.
