One reason is that black dogs are perceived to be more aggressive and dangerous. This is just not the case, but somehow black dogs have become associated with negative stereotypes and superstitions.
Other reasons include that they heat up faster outside and tend to be big lab mixes that are not in style at the moment.
Sadly, black dogs are too common. They are more difficult to photograph for rescue group postings and people say they look meaner when in fact they are not. Black dogs are just as sweet on the inside as lighter colored dogs and are also strikingly beautiful on the outside with their shiny black coats and striking eyes. One way we highlight them at the Humane Society is to place a bright colored bandana or collar on them.
